Getting documents in
Drop them in and look before you send
On the Add screen, drop files or choose them. Each one is opened on this computer to find its page count and whether it already contains text. Nothing has been sent at this point. Only when you press Keep them does anything leave.
The same file twice is noticed
Documents are fingerprinted, so the statement that arrives by email three times is kept once and you are told rather than ending up with three.
The rule this is built on
The original is never changed
Not once, by anything. Rotating a page, removing one, correcting a figure, adding a signature: none of it touches the file you uploaded. Each change is stored separately and pressing Save a new copy builds a new document from the original plus those changes. That means you can always produce the document exactly as it arrived, and show what was changed, by whom and when. For anybody holding other people's paperwork that is the difference between a working file you can defend and one somebody altered.
What you can do
Pages
Turn a scan the right way up, take a page out, jump about with the numbered strip under the viewer. Then save a new copy, or close the page and nothing has happened at all.
Combine
Pick documents in the order you want them and they are stitched together here, in your browser, into a new document. None of the originals are touched.
Read the text, and then find it
Press Read the text and the words are pulled out page by page. After that, the search on the documents list looks through every word of every page, not just the names. Half remember a figure and you will find the document and the page.
The trail
Every document keeps a record of who opened it, who changed it, who exported it and what any redaction covered. It is on the document's own screen.
Questions
Do my documents get uploaded?
Only the ones you choose to keep, and only when you press Keep. While you are combining, rotating or reading, the file is being handled by your own browser and has not gone anywhere. Nothing is ever sent to a third party.
Can I edit the text in a document?
Not yet, and the honest answer has two halves. On a scan there is no text to edit at all until it has been read, and reading scans is the next thing being built; after that, correcting one is realistic. On a document that was typed rather than scanned the text is real but locked to fonts embedded in the file, often with only the characters that document happened to use, so changing a 4 to a 5 can mean the 5 simply does not exist. We would rather tell you we cannot than mangle the page.
Is this a replacement for Acrobat?
For assembling, signing, reading and finding, yes. For full editing of typed documents, no, and we would rather say so. Keep one licence of a proper editor for that job.
What does it cost per page?
Nothing. There is no per page charge and there cannot be one, because the work is not happening on our computers. A thousand pages costs the same as one.
